You won’t be able to play Xbox Series X games from an external hard drive, but it’s still worth plugging one into your system. In fact, you can use the same one that was plugged into your Xbox One and start playing the same games immediately.

During the latest Inside Xbox episode, Xbox Series X director of program management Jason Ronald shared that you’ll be able to unplug your external drive containing Xbox One games from the old console, plug it into Xbox Series X, and get access to the same games running from the external drive.

This means the 1 TB storage on Xbox Series X and the optional 1 TB expansion card can be reserved for next-generation games alone, while everything else is stored on an external USB drive.

You can, however, still store Xbox Series X games on a connected external drive, but you will need to transfer them to either the expansion card or the internal SSD before they’re playable because of the required speed.

With support for games dating back to the original Xbox, those storage possibilities should keep you from having to delete games to make room for newer ones. Certain Xbox One games like Halo 5: Guardians and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare already top 100 GB with post-launch updates installed, and these file sizes are likely to become the norm as resolutions and fidelity increase.

Xbox Series X is scheduled to launch this holiday alongside Halo Infinite and an upgraded Gears 5 that will make use of the console’s Smart Delivery system.
