Weekend Hot Topic, part 1: Dream video game mash-up

GameCentral readers imagine their ideal video game crossovers, from Mario vs. Sonic to Bayonetta meets Dante.

The subject for this week’s Hot Topic was suggested by reader Paulie, who asked you to combine two or more games into one new title – whether they be games with similar gameplay or from completely different genres.

There were plenty of fun suggestions, but unfortunately the ones that make the most sense, like Tomb Raider x Uncharted and Mortal Kombat x Street Fighter, are probably the least likely to happen.

Mortal Fighter
I still dream of the Mortal Kombat vs. Street Fighter game I know we’re never going to get. It’s frustrating because I know that Capcom and NetherRealm have talked about it multiple times but they can never get past the point that they don’t want people ripping of Chun-Li or Ryu’s head, which I get but it’s a real shame. They really toned down the violence in Mortal Kombat Vs. DC Universe though, so I don’t know why they couldn’t do that again.

Those two games were basically my childhood and while I’m not actually that much into fighting games any more they’re what got me into gaming and I would love to see a team-up. There’s something special about a crossover I think, that makes it seem exciting even when you’re not that bothered about the games individually.

I mean, I barely know who half the characters are in Smash Bros. but I still love the game for all its deep cuts and sense of celebration. There should be more of that in gaming.

Worthy opponents
This one’s easy for me; Bayonetta and Devil May Cry. They already share a bunch of DNA and are similar in gameplay. Add to that that PlatinumGames and Capcom are quite friendly, visiting each others’ studios and the like. Honestly, it’s just great that there’s this one-upmanship going on between them, you think Bayonetta 2’s as good as it gets? have a face full of Devil May Cry 5!

Can you imagine the nerds (me included) if the Bayonetta 3 trailer shows up and Dante appears at the end and talks some smack??* I can’t even….
ANON
*Scratch that, can you imagine if a Bayonetta 3 trailer shows up full stop?!

Skyrim Valley
I would love to see Skyrim (yes, more Skyrim) mixed with Stardew Valley.

I’ve played the game so much since 2011 I don’t care for killing much now (I went ages using ‘calm’ spells, I was so off-put by the amount of death I was creating).

I’d love to tend properly to a seasonal growing of both crops and relationships in the prettiest 3D world I love most.

There’s only so much mods can do currently.

And, if somehow David Attenborough can be immortalised as a character who explains all the flora and fauna, that would be a lovely bonus.

Super Mario: Robot Rescue
Mario and Astro Bot in VR. Preferably Super Mario Galaxy 3 with Bowser and the alien dude combining to enslave some Mushroom Kimgdom inhabitants on board the Astro spaceship and send others across the galaxy. Mario and Astro would team up (both still mute characters) head off into different solar systems and use some sort of interdimensional rift device meaning you can swap characters instantaneously (SSD speeds) to jump between the different planets that they’re on.

Items that Astro would find could be warped straight to Mario to aid him in his levels and vice versa. Boss battles would be fought at the same time, with Mario and Astro fighting different ones with weapons that can be sent through the rift to deal damage to either boss at different stages of the fight.

It’d probably play more like Rescue Mission to avoid motion sickness but basically levels would unfold and increase in size before your eyes, much like the beanstalk level in Astro, making the game worlds mesmerising and complex. Team Asobi would hand out the initial advice to Nintendo on what works best in VR and then both would go berserk and create the most imaginative, charming, and mind-blowing game in the history of the multiverse.

Of course, it’ll never happen but just the idea of hundreds of bots and toads on the spaceship screaming in joy, carrying the victors Mario and Astro above their heads with the timeless Mario theme tune tickling your fun glands is enough to justify Sony and Nintendo putting aside their differences and giving the public what they so demand.

Beyond the Olympics
One game I would like to see happen is a crossover with Mario and Sonic, correction: a good crossover with Mario and Sonic. I think if Nintendo developed it I think it could be the best Sonic game for a while, since Sonic Mania. Finally, there could be a really good 3D Sonic game and Mario would be there too. They could have levels created for each character (no C-list characters from the Sonic games) and then levels where they could be played in co-op with one player Mario and one
Sonic or controlled by CPU if you didn’t have someone else to play with.

Nintendo are very good at making video games and I think they could make a good go of it, just don’t let Sega make it! Perhaps to get around the problem of Sonic being so fast with a different style of play the game could be designed like a Super Mario Galaxy game.

Dude Raider
I would love to see a crossover between Nathan Drake of Uncharted and Lara Croft of Tomb Raider fame.

The storyline could be that they are both hunting for the same artefact and have to reluctantly team up in the hunt for their treasure. It would also be a great co-op game.

BioWare x BioWare
An interesting question this and while thinking about my answer I came up with an idea that sounds better and better the more I think of it: a crossover between Dragon Age and Mass Effect. They’re both BioWare games, so that’s no problem, but I’ve always loved the idea of sci-fi mixing with fantasy – I mean, there’s a reason why Star Wars is so popular.

I don’t know if you’d do it by saying that Mass Effect is the future of Dragon Age (I can’t remember what the explanation for biotics is but it’s basically magic) or they just go through a black hole or something and end up there but I’d love to see how the characters would interact and how high-tech and magic would have their advantages and disadvantages.

BioWare games often cover a lot of similar interpersonal issues between the two franchises so you could easily have friendships and romances blossoming between the two groups. Also, I’m kind of getting bored of straight up Tolkien-esque fantasy. It’s always the same and I’m not really sure that Dragon Age 4 is implying it’ll do anything different.

The Normandy turning up at the beginning of the game and getting in a fight with a dragon though, that’d be different…
