SonicFox’s Latest Mortal Kombat 11 Tier List Is Very Positive About Everyone

A mere eight months following its release, Mortal Kombat 11 is already considered the most balanced game in the series. A recent tweet by Dominique “SonicFox” McLean, the best Mortal Kombat 11 player in the world, affirms this with a wholesome and positive tier list of characters.

Whereas competitive members of the fighting game community (FGC) often provide their own tier lists from “S” tier, meaning the best of the best, all the way down to unusable or trash characters due to a complete lack of competitive viability, SonicFox tweets a tier list that begins at an “A” ranking, and the bottom portion left vacant with the message, “There is no Unviable character.”

Comparing previous games in the Mortal Kombat series is like night and day. In both Mortal Kombat from 2011 (also referred to as Mortal Kombat 9) and Mortal Kombat X there were significant balance issues throughout the lifespan of each game, with certain characters never becoming competitively viable at the highest levels of play.

For Mortal Kombat 11 to be so balanced is a real feat. In the first months following the release of the game this year, there was a less balanced roster of characters, with the top spots almost always falling to Cassie Cage, Sonya Blade, Erron Black, Geras, Jacqui Briggs, Cetrion, and occasionally a few other fighters.

It took only a few tweaks over a couple of patches to streamline virtually all characters to similar levels of competitive viability. The changes were in many cases microscopic and of no real consequence to the average player, such as a character losing or gaining a total of 5% of their health point total or shaving a couple of frames off certain moves or the recovery of a move.

As impressive is how well the DLC fighters of the first Kombat Pack have been integrated into the game, all of which feel strong and viable at a competitive level from the beginning without being overpowered.

The balanced roster of fighters will make 2020 an exciting year to watch the best of the best fight for dominance in Mortal Kombat 11. SonicFox handily won their 2019 EVO Grand Finals, but with so many other players performing well at other competitive events, it will be a hard fight to retain their title.
