It wasn’t mentioned during the showcase itself, but Polyphony Digital has since confirmed a release date for Gran Turismo 7.

With Gran Turismo 7 being delayed to 2022, you’d think its presence at the PlayStation Showcase would mean Sony and Polyphony Digital had a specific release date for it.

Much like God Of War Ragnarök, no release date was giving during the showcase itself, but a post-showcase PlayStation Blog post has shared more concrete details about the game, including a release date of March 4.

‘The objective for GT7 in current culture today, is to design a game to convey everything from the last 150 years of car and racing culture, whether you are a lifelong fan or discovering cars for the first time,’ writes Gran Turismo creator Kazunori Yamauchi.

‘GT7 is both the culmination of the series which answers the expectations of GT fans throughout the years, and at the same time it is a title that marks a beginning of a difficult mission to contain the full breadth of car culture from the past into a single video game.’

He says that Gran Turismo 7 is designed as a ‘car collecting game,’ more so than any other entry in the series. Judging by Yamauchi’s words, the aim isn’t just to make a game for car lovers but to help newcomers fall in love with car culture.

‘The first step in truly connecting with car culture is to learn and remember the shapes and names of the cars. This is where love and passion in cars begin – FF, FR, 911, 356, transmission… interest in typical terms like these appearing in car culture only comes from first knowing and recognizing the shapes and names of the cars.’

Many features will be making a comeback, including the campaign mode, car customisation, and the livery editor; as well as the Trial Mountain and High-Speed Ring circuits. Both of these tracks have appeared in almost every mainline Gran Turismo game since the first one but most haven’t been confirmed till now.

Some small print at the bottom of the blog post, however, reveals that almost every mode and feature requires an Internet connection, which makes it sound as if Grand Turismo 7 will be otherwise unplayable offline.

Although the trailer was for the PlayStation 5 version the game will also launch for the PlayStation 4, and anyone who buys the last gen version will need to pay for the PlayStation 5 upgrade, as per Sony’s new policies.

Gran Turismo 7 releases for PlayStation 4 and 5 on March 4 2022.
