Final Fantasy VII Remake Cast Discusses Voicing Iconic Characters

Final Fantasy VII Remake will feature new voice actors for the game’s familiar cast. They all came together to discuss their feelings about being tasked with voicing such iconic characters in a recent interview at PAX East.

Final Fantasy VII was released at a time when few video games featured full voice acting, especially not games that could be played for over forty hours. The first fully-voiced Final Fantasy game was Final Fantasy X on the PlayStation 2, but the cast of Final Fantasy VII were voiced in other appearances, including the Kingdom Hearts games and Advent Children.

Tifa Lockhart was voiced by Rachel Leigh Cook for years, but she will be voiced by Britt Baron (GLOW, Halo 5: Guardians) in Final Fantasy VII Remake. Baron was unaware of who Tifa was when taking the role, but after spending time voicing the character, she “feels like [she’s] lived as Tifa for a point of [her] life.”

Aerith Gainsborough was voiced by several different actors in the past, including Andrea Bowen, Mena Suvari, and Mandy Moore. She will be voiced by Briana White (Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders) in Final Fantasy VII Remake. Speaking of playing Aerith, White described it as “absolutely one of the most challenging things [she’s] done”, especially as this is her first video game role.

Final Fantasy VII didn’t have any voice acting, so many fans who played the game when it was first released have their own ideas of what the characters sound like. This means that any voice cast would face scrutiny for providing voices to such iconic characters, but the actors lending their performances to Final Fantasy VII Remake have embraced the challenge. A lot has been said about Final Fantasy VII Remake (especially now that the demo is available), but the reaction to the voices from the fans has been positive so far.

Final Fantasy VII Remake will be released for PlayStation 4 on April 10, 2020.
