Final Fantasy 7 Remake will NOT be releasing early digitally

Despite physical copies already being out in some countries, Final Fantasy 7 Remake is sticking to its original release date on digital.

The current coronavirus pandemic has thrown a lot of games’ schedules out of sync. The Last Of Us Part 2, for example, was meant to launch next month but has now been put on an indefinite delay.

In the case of Final Fantasy 7 Remake, however, the game has actually shipped early in some parts of the world, with Square Enix choosing to do this to avoid people getting their physical copies late.

However, this seems to only be the case with physical copies of the game. Discovered by ResetEra, one fan asked Square Enix why they couldn’t play the digital version early as well.

According to an official Square Enix response, changing the release date of the digital version would only ‘disrupt’ the launch.

‘While we understand the frustration of seeing the game for sale in some locations, the bulk of our shipments to retailers around the globe are still scheduled to arrive in stores for our April 10 street date’, reads the statement.

‘Also, changing the digital release date at this point-in-time could lead to logistical issues that could disrupt the digital launch for everyone. Therefore, we will be adhering to an April 10 digital release date. Thank you for your understanding.’

While this is certainly disappointing for some, especially with there being a real risk of some fans accidentally stumbling spoilers, Square Enix did release one last trailer earlier today to maybe tide us over.

The trailer features a lot of revamped events from the original game and what appear to be all-new scenes with new characters too. We also get our first look at recurring antagonist Rufus Shinra, the bizarre Hell House enemy, and even some parts of the game’s climax.

This includes the motorbike chase sequence, which is looking particularly cinematic, and some sort of confrontation with main villain Sephiroth.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake will release exclusively for PlayStation 4 on 10 April.
